Located in Daly City, the Tokyo House proves that you don’t have to hit the big city to find big taste. Tokyo House is open every day for lunch and dinner. Lunch is a great time to come to Tokyo House, where the lunch specials really shine. How about a California roll, tempura, and teriyaki combo for just $6.50, which includes miso soup, salad, and rice? That’s a great deal! Dinner is also a great time to come to the Tokyo House for excellent teriyaki and sashimi. And, of course, there’s the sushi, made and served fresh all day. Try a Makimono roll, Nigiri sushi, or temaki hand-rolled delights. Make sure that you also check out the chef’s specials and bento boxes.

A favorite beach for locals, Stinson Beach is known for its great surf, clean facilities, and dog-friendly spirit. Driving to Stinson Beach is half the fun, with winding roads carved into the side of the cliffs that afford spectacular views of the Pacific. Parking, changing rooms and bathrooms are all conveniently located near the beach, with bonus amenities like a snack area and a BBQ spot. The three-mile long sandbar can handle large crowds with room to spare, even accommodating volleyball courts. Dogs and their owners are welcomed at the northern tip of Stinson Beach, and the nearby town contains several dog-friendly cafés for a bite after a visit. Lifeguards are on duty from Memorial Day to Labor Day to ensure visitors’ utmost safety. Recommended by locals for surfing, swimming, picnicking and rafting, Stinson Beach makes for a great day-trip to the Pacific.

If you’re looking for one of the greatest gourmet shopping experiences in the United States, get down to the Ferry Building Marketplace for a taste of Heaven. When the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay Bridge made ferry travel in the area basically obsolete, the gorgeous Ferry Building lay wasted for decades. After the Embarcadero Freeway, which hid the building from sight, was demolished in 1991, the time was ripe to rehabilitate the building into something truly special. The Ferry Building was opened in 2003 with a world-class public food market occupying the ground floor. Representatives from local farms gather streetside to sell their freshest crops, many of which are certified organic. Head inside for a flabbergasting array of prepared and exotic foods—pretty much anything you’d ever need to prepare a transcendent meal is here for the taking. There are so many vendors here that you could eat a different thing every day, but just don’t miss Pepples, the tiny organic doughnut stall, no matter what.

If you’re getting ready to take a trip, it’s wise to do a little research beforehand. The bookstore is overflowing with travel guides, though, so how do you know which one is best for you? This article will run down the most informative travel guides for all kinds of jet-setters.

The Lonely Planet travel guides are best for people looking to get close to the ground on their trips. These guidebooks are excellent for less-developed countries, including Southeast Asia. If you’re not looking to spend a lot of money on your trip, start here.

Younger travelers rave about the Let’s Go guides. The company was started by a group of Harvard students and has grown rapidly. These guides are great for nightlife recommendations in foreign cities, including bars and nightclubs.

The Frommer’s guides are reasonably popular, especially for Americans visiting Europe with not a lot of time to spare. They are clear and concise, but some complain that they miss out on more obscure attractions.

Footprint Handbooks are some of the best travel guides out there. Starting from their encyclopedic South American volume, the company has spun out nearly 80 other guides, all of which are well-written and beautifully illustrated.

Diners on the hunt for fresh seafood with an amazing view of the ocean have been flocking to Nick’s in Pacifica for almost a century. Opened in 1927 by Greek immigrant Stalios Karagianis, the restaurant has remained in the family since then, establishing a history of service to the community that is hard to beat. Regulars return over and over again for the famous crab and tomato sandwich—a massive pile of lump crab, mayonnaise, and fresh tomatoes that has become a local icon. It comes with awesome thick-cut spicy fries, and getting through this meal will tax even the most huge-stomached eaters. The clam chowder is some of the best in the area. For dinner, the steaks are cooked to tender perfection, but opt for mashed potatoes instead of the baked, as they’re far better. Nick’s is a spectacular throwback, bursting with local history, and it’s a place anyone in Pacifica would be wise to go to at least once.

More interactive, more educational, and more fun than the average museum, the Exploratorium is a place where young and old can explore science, art, and human perception in a hands-on way. Exhibits on everything from electricity and motion, to sound and sight, to emotions and facial expressions, can be explored by guests at their own pace. Perhaps the most unique exploration area is Mind, where guests focus on their own cognitive states with activities like reading emotions on faces and detecting a friend telling a lie. With more than 450 exhibits on view at all times, guests need at least 3 hours to see everything, and will probably want to come back again and again! The Exploratorium is a wonderful place to get kids (and grown-ups!) excited and engaged with science.

A great place for a gathering of coworkers, family, or friends, Andalu brings people together with a wide variety of dishes. Aiming to create a unique dining and social experience, Andalu features a smattering of small plates meant for tasting and sharing. Ranging from Duck Confit Dumplings to Coca-Cola Braised Short Ribs, their small plates reflect a multitude of cuisine from around the world. Specials like Taco Tuesdays (featuring $1 ahi tuna tacos) and a $15 Bottomless Mimosa brunch makes dining affordable. Andalu boasts one of the most expansive wine lists in the city, with a wide selection of half-bottles as well as unique flights. The dining room is sure to impress with an open kitchen and high ceiling, and the tall tables add to the fun and relaxed atmosphere. Delicious small plates and a variety of spirits make Andalu a destination for a night on the town.
